The accelerator pedal should be released during all upward gear changes and should be used during downward changes to increase the engine speed proportionately to the road speed to ensure smooth engagement and taking up of the drive when the clutch pedal is released.No attempt should be made to snatch the gears into engagement, as this will not allow the engaging cones time to synchronise their respective speeds to permit silent engagement. It is extremely bad practice to slip the clutch unduly, or to rest the foot on the clutch pedal when driving as this causes excessive wear of the components concerned.SPEED ON GEARSIf the longevity of the engine, and in fact the car generally is to be considered, it is recommended that the following speeds shall not be frequently exceeded and maintained in indirect gears:%u20143rd Gear ... 65 m.p.h. ( 45 km.p.h.)USESE OOF BRRAKESESThe braking system provides progressive power with a minimum of effort on the part of the driver. Harsh use of the brakes should be avoided as such treatment places considerable and unnecessary strain on the whole of the transmission system besides accelerating wear of the tyres. Heavy and sudden braking on greasy road surfaces provokes skidding, particularly if the car is negotiating a bend. Wherever possible, braking should be carried out whilst the car is running in a straight line. The indirect gears should be used when descending exceptionally steep gradients.RRUNNNNINNG INN A NEW CARIt is recommended that the following speeds should not be exceeded within the first 500 miles (800 km.) of running. Thereafter speeds should be gradually increased until 1,500 miles (2,400 km.) have been covered, after which the full performance of the car can be used.Top Gear... 45-50 m.p.h. (24 km.p.h.)Imp mportatanttIn the initial stages of %u2018running-in%u2019 it is essential that the work the engine is called upon to do should be light. Frequent use of the intermediate gears and the avoidance of violent acceleration will relieve the load on the engine and transmission units. The car should never be allowed to labour up gradients on a high gear when the use of a smaller throttle opening on a lower gear would suffice to maintain the same speed.The importance of adequate lubrication during the running-in period cannot be too heavily stressed and the instructions for the lubrication of new cars which are given in the appropriate sections of this manual should be strictly observed.
