ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEMThe large capacity, submerged, gear type oil pump is driven from the camshaft by a vertical shaft and draws in oil from the sump through a floating filter, the neck of which pivots in the oil pump allowing the filter to rise and fall with the level of the oil. Oil is delivered under pressure into an oil gallery from which it is fed through internal oil ways to the seven thin wall, steel backed main bearings, the big end and camshaft bearings, the timing chain, and the valve rockers.Vaalvve Geaar LLububricati icationThe oil supply to the rocker shaft is regulated by a ball valve restrictor incorporated in the foot of the centre rocker shaft bracket. When the engine is running the oil pressure holds the ball on its seating, allowing only a limited supply of oil to pass to the valve gear. Initially when the engine is started a substantial quantity of oil escapes past the ball and flushes away any foreign particles which may tend to block the small restriction in the valve seating. The oil escapes through holes drilled in the rockers and gravitates to the tappets and cams before returning to the sump. Part of the oil supply is bled from the rocker shaft and directed on to the distributor drive gear on the camshaft. It is a good point to occasionally remove the oil filler cap from the rocker cover while the engine is running at a moderate speed and check that oil is flowing from the holes in those rockers which are visible.
