The clutch operating shaft bearings do however require lubrication, and a small quantity of grease should be applied through the nipple on the end of the shaft every 1,000 miles (1,600 km.).GeaarbboxThe gearbox is of an exceptionally robust design employing constant mesh double helical gears and providing synchromesh engagement for second, third, and top gear. The main shaft gears, which are fully in mesh with the lay-shaft gears, rotate on needle roller bearings and can be locked to the main shaft by synchromesh units sliding on the Clutch operating shaft grease nipple, splined main shaft. When it is desired to select a gear, the appropriate synchromesh unit is slid along the main shaft towards the gear by the selector fork until the steel cone ring on the synchromesh unit comes into contact with the bronze cone keyed to the gear. As the gear and synchromesh unit, which arerotating at different speeds, come into contact they influence each other mutually, the slower tending to retard the faster, and vice versa, until the engaging dogs, located on the synchromesh unit by spring-loaded balls, can slide forward and engage the dogs on the gear without clashing.Geaarbbox LLububricati icationThe gearbox oil filler is located on the left-hand side of the gearbox casing and is made accessible by lifting a hinged trap door in the floor. The oil capacity of the gearbox is 3 pints (1.7 litres) and the oil level should be maintained within 1%u201d of the filler cap. When replacing the filler cap care should be taken that the joint washer is sound and the cap firmly screwed down. A hexagon headed plug is provided in the bottom of the gearbox casing to facilitate draining the oil, an operation which is most satisfactorily carried out when the oil is warm after a run.The oil should be changed after the first 500 miles (800 km.), and thereafter every 5,000 miles (8,000 km.); check the level of the oil and top up if necessary with the recommended grade of oil every 2,000 miles (3,200 km.). When this is being done take the opportunity to clear the breather holes in the filler cap with a piece of wire. Proppeller SShaft aftThe propeller shaft has a needle roller bearing universal joint at each end, both joints and the splines at the front end being provided with nipples through which oil should be injected to the universal joints and grease to the splines every 1,000 miles (1,600 k.m.).In the unlikely event of failure of one of the propeller shaft joints, the complete shaft should be replaced by one obtained from the Works or from an ALVIS distributor, as these shafts are balanced to ensure freedom from vibration. If the front joint is pulled off the propeller shaft, it must be replaced in the splines so that the arrows on the two parts are correctly aligned to preserve the balance of the complete shaft.
