Page 37.Alvis Three Litre Shop Manual - T.A. 21 and T.C. 21Greasing nipple for propeller shaft splines.RReaar AxleThe rear axle is of the hypoid semi-floating type with shim adjustment for all bearings and for the meshing of the crown wheel and pinion. The axle shafts are splined at the inner ends to engage splines in the differential side gears. The outer ends of the shafts are provided with tapers and keys for attaching the rear wheel hubs. The wheels are each supported on a taper roller bearing pressed on to the axle shaft and the side thrust from the wheels is transferred from one shaft to the other by a thrust block straddling the differential pinion mate shaft. A cover on the rear of the gear carrier housing permits inspection and flushing of the differential assembly without dismantling the axle.RReaar Axle LLububricati icationThe correct lubrication of the hypoid rear axle is of the utmost importance. ON NO ACCOUNT MUST OILS OTHER THAN THE APPROVED HYPOID OILS BE USED, and these oils must not be mixed one with another. It cannot be too strongly emphasised that ordinary socalled %u2018extreme pressure%u2019 lubricants are not suitable for use in hypoid axles, and may cause premature failure of the axle gears. After the first 500 miles (800 km.) drain the axle, and refill with the brand of oil you intend to use. Thereafter replenish only with this brand of oil; if a change is desired, the axle must again be drained and refilled with the new brand.Check the level of the oil and top up if necessary every 2,000 miles (3,200 km.) and change the oil every 5,000 miles (8,000 km.); the combined filler and level plug (A) is in the rear cover of the axle. The oil capacity of the axle is 21/4 pints (1.3 litres). Drain the axle by means of the bottom plug (B) after a run when the oil is warm, and allow adequate draining time before refilling. The filling and changing of oil in the rear axle is under the best conditions an awkward and dirty job for an owner to undertake. He is well advised to allow a service station to do it, but should insist on the aforesaid instructions being carried out.
