Page 18.Alvis Three Litre Shop Manual - T.A. 21 and T.C. 21Although it is not to be expected that there will be any appreciable loss of water except over fairly lengthy intervals or under exceptionally arduous running conditions, it is advisable to inspect the level at least every 250 miles (400 km.) or weekly.If the system has been completely drained and then refilled, the water level will fall at first when the water begins to circulate, due to the expulsion of air from the car heater, more water should then be added to bring it up to the correct level.Water PumpThe fan and water pump bearing is packed with grease during assembly and requires no subsequent lubrication. A springloaded carbon water retaining gland is incorporated in the pump; it is selfadjusting and requires no attention. Watater Temp mperatu atureA water temperature gauge is provided on the fascia board to give the driver an accurate indication of the engine temperature. The normal running temperature should be between 60%u00b0 and 70%u00b0 C. Variations from this temperature are of course allowable, particularly under very arduous running conditions such as prolonged running in indirect gears under heavy traffic conditions or abnormal hill climbing. Any excessive rise in temperature which cannot be associated with the prevailing conditions should be investigated immediately. Faan BelttThe fan, which is mounted on the water pump shaft, is driven from the crankshaft by a vee belt which also drives the dynamo. Any slackness of the belt can be taken up by slackening off the dynamo mounting nuts and clamping screw (A), swinging the dynamo outwards until the correct belt tension has been obtained, and then tightening the adjusting screw and mounting nuts in that position.
