The cam should also be lubricated by smearing it with a very small quantity of light grease or clean engine oil.In order to lubricate the cam bearing, the rotor arm must be withdrawn from the end of the spindle and a few drops of oil added; it is not necessary to remove the screw which is exposed to view as there is a clearance between the screw and the inner face of the spindle through which the oil can pass to the bearing. When lubricating the distributor do not allow any oil or grease to get on or near the contacts.Contact tact BreakakerDuring the first 500 miles (800 km.) running of a new car the contact breaker heel usually %u2018beds down%u2019 and it is advisable to check the gap between the contacts at this stage. There should be a gap of 0.012%u201d when the contacts are fully separated, which may be checked by the feeler gauge provided in the tool kit. This gauge should be a sliding fit between the contacts and if this varies appreciably the gap should be reset by slackening the two screws securing the fixed contact and moving the contact plate until the correct gap has been obtained. Recheck the gap to ensure that no movement has taken place while tightening the screws.Thereafter it is advisable to inspect the contacts every 5,000 miles (8,000 km.) and if they are burned or blackened clean them with a fine carborundum stone or very fine emery cloth. This is best achieved when the contacts are removed; the moving contact can be drawn off its pivot after slackening off the terminal post nut which secures the end of the spring. The contact faces should be kept flat and parallel to each other and should be finally cleaned with a petrol moistened cloth. The moulded distributor cap should occasionally be cleaned externally and internally with a soft dry cloth, and the small carbon brush checked to see that it works freely in its central housing.Iggniti ition Timi iminggTo facilitate setting the ignition timing the periphery of the flywheel is marked in increments of 5%u00b0, the top dead centre position A view of the top of the clutch housing showing flywheel at top dead centre.
