The top end of each coil spring is housed in a pan formed by an extension of the front cross member, the bottom end resting on the lower and longer suspension linkAnti ti-roll BaarAn anti-roll bar is fitted between the two lower suspension links to restrain the car from rolling and maintain stability and road holding when cornering. It is mounted on rubber bushes and requires no lubrication or attention.Frontt SShockck AbbsorbbersThe Girling telescopic shock absorbers are housed within the coil springs and are mounted on rubber at both ends. These units need no attention as there is no external adjustment and they do not require topping up with fluid. If, however, it becomes necessary to remove a front shock absorber, the following procedure should be adopted.Jack up the front wheel concerned; remove the two lock-nuts from the top mounting and the four self-locking nuts which secure the shock absorber brackets to the lower suspension link. Withdraw the shock absorber through the lower suspension link and then remove its mounting brackets from the bottom end. When replacing the shock absorber the reverse procedure should be followed.RReaar SSppriinggsThe frame is upswept over the rear axle which is carried on long semi-elliptical springs. The rear axle is mounted forward of the centre point of the springs so that advantage may be taken of the extreme length of the springs without increasing the wheel base. Rubber bushes are used to anchor the springs at their front ends and are also incorporated in the shackles which are fitted to the rear ends. The spring leaves are enclosed in gaiters which during assembly are packed with grease; no further lubrication should therefore be necessary. It is advisable to occasionally check that the spring securing bolts are firmly tightened.RReaar SShockck AbbsorbbersGirling telescopic shock absorbers are also fitted to the rear springs, being mounted with an outward splay to give improved lateral stability. These shock absorbers also function as a positive check on the rebound of the axle, being fitted with check valves providing a hydraulic cushion at the end of the rebound travel. It is important that the car should not be run without these units, as the check on the rebound is essential to the preservation of clearance between the propeller shaft and the rear intermediate cross member.SStteeriingg aand SSuusppensiion Mai ainttenaancceThe fulfilment of the following brief lubrication instructions will not only influence the longevity of the working parts, but will also have a marked effect on the lightness and accuracy of the steering mechanism and the smooth riding qualities of the car.Cars which have to be driven continuously over dusty roads and through extended rainy seasons may need more attention to the lubrication of exposed chassis points, and the frequency of lubrication should be increased accordingly.EVERY 1,000 MILES (1,600 K.M.).
