Page 45.Alvis Three Litre Shop Manual - T.A. 21 and T.C. 21If there is any excessive hand brake travel after the brakes have been adjusted, the rear wheel adjusters should be locked up hard, the link of the hand brake cable adjusted to take up any slackness, and the rear brakes adjusted in the normal manner.A grease nipple is provided where the brake cable outer casing is attached to the frame. This grease point, which is accessible from beneath the car, should receive attention every 1,000 miles (1,600 km.) and the compensator sprayed with oil.RReliiniinggWhen the brakes need relining only the correct type of linings should be used, replacement shoes being obtainable from the Works or from ALVIS Distributors. If different types of linings are used unbalanced braking may result.The presence of oil or water on the brakes will obviously affect their efficiency. Whilst water will dry off as the brakes are used, it is not possible to remove grease successfully from the linings, and in such cases the brake shoes should be replaced.Bleediingg tthe SSysttemmBleeding the system to expel air should only be necessary when part of the hydraulic equipment has been disconnected or when the fluid has been drained off. To carry out this operation proceed as follows:%u2014I. Fill the master cylinder reservoir with fluid and keep it at least a quarter full throughout the operation to ensure that no air is drawn into the system.II. Attach a rubber tube to the bleeder screw on one of the wheel cylinder banjo connections, allowing the free end to be completely submerged in a little brake fluid in a clean glass jar.III. Unscrew the bleeder screw one complete turn only, and depress the brake pedal slowly, allowing it to return unassisted, repeating this pumping action with a slight pause between each stroke. Fluid will flow from the tube and also bubbles of air being removed from the system; when the bubbles cease to appear the pedal should be held at the bottom of its stroke and the bleeder screw securely tightened.IV. Bleed the remaining wheel cylinders in a similar manner; the front wheel cylinders have one bleeder screw for the two cylinders on each back plate.Before the displaced fluid can be used again it must be allowed to stand, to allow the bubbles to clear. The fluid should be protected from dust and discarded if dirty.Brakake Mai ainttenaancceEVERY 1,000 MILES (1,600 K.M.). %u2013 Apply grease through the hand brake cable nipple. %u2013 Spray the rear axle brake compensator with oil.EVERY 2,000 MILES (3,200 K.M.) %u2013 Check the level of the brake fluid in the mastercylinder and adjust the brakes.
